Maher promoted the "surprise" revelation on his Twitter account prior to his appearance onstage for the performance of "StupidCrazyPolitics" for Yahoo's Live Standup Series.
Thank u everybody who's hit me up after the show, and a great San Jose audience. Obama donation was a surprise to Yahoo too fyi!— Bill Maher (@billmaher) Feb. 24, 2012
The Obama campaign earlier this month announced its support of Priorities USA as a source of funding for the president's reelection campaign. As a Democratic super-PAC, Priorities USA is allowed to raise unlimited funds so long as it is officially unaffiliated with a candidate. The Obama campaign plans to skirt the rules by sending campaign officials — not including Obama, Vice President Biden or their spouses — to Priorities USA fundraising events.
The super-PAC raised only $59,000 in January, before the announcement, putting the group well behind the super-PACs supporting Republican presidential candidates such as Mitt Romney.
