“Just from a political perspective, do you think the president of the United States going into reelection wants gas prices to go up higher?” Obama said. “Is that — is there anybody here who thinks that makes a lot of sense?”
Obama was responding to a question from Fox News’s Ed Henry, who noted that Republicans have suggested Obama favors higher gas prices because it will wean people off fossil fuels in favor of renewable fuels.
“Look, here's the bottom line with respect to gas prices: I want gas prices lower because they hurt families,” Obama said.
The White House has moved quickly to deflect GOP criticism that higher gas prices are a result of the administration’s policies, calling the allegations “bumper sticker” politics.
Republicans believe Obama is vulnerable to the attacks because the he rejected the Keystone XL pipeline.
