"I saw it and I just had to do it," Ryan told CNN on Sunday, saying he had recently come across a mask of Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee.
Romney picked Ryan as his running mate during that election, and the two men have become friends.
Romney encouraged Ryan to run for president before he ruled it out early this year. He also called Ryan late last week to discuss the GOP efforts to recruit the congressman for Speaker.
Ryan is the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and a spokesman maintained Monday he's unlikely to make any announcement about the Speaker's race this week.
Many Republicans hope Ryan changes his mind and runs to succeed outgoing John Boehner (R-Ohio), after Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) dropped out in a shocker last week.
