The family of the wife of the Orlando shooter said their daughter did not have any role in the mass shooting.

"Noor is completely innocent and [was] unaware of the attacks," the family said in a statement to ABC News.

The family said their daughter, the wife of shooter Omar Mateen, does not understand "cause and effect."

She was enrolled in special education classes at school and a teacher who knew Noor Salman said she had learning disabilities.

"Noor had difficulty with retention, she had difficulty with conceptualizing, understanding, all challenges to her," Salman's middle school teacher, referred to as Susan, told ABC News.

"She tried hard. She was very sweet."

Salman's family confirmed that Susan was their daughter's special education teacher.

The wife of Mateen was considered a "special day class student," which meant she took all of her classes with special education teachers, ABC News reported.

Salman on June 12 killed 49 people wounded 53 others in an Orlando nightclub, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
