Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), on Friday said that he asked the Justice Department to investigate a tweet by former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) that he said threatened President Obama.
Ellison urged Attorney General Loretta Lynch to determine whether the tweet constituted a "terroristic threat" against the president, Politico reported.
Walsh posted, then quickly deleted, his tweet after the Dallas police shootings last week.
“3 Dallas cops killed, 7 wounded. This is now war. Watch out Obama. Watch out black lives matter punks. Real America is coming after you,” he wrote.
Ellison said the tweet incites violence and legally constitutes a terroristic threat.
“This particular statement bears significant weight because of Walsh’s position as a high-profile former Member of Congress. As such, Mr. Walsh’s refusal to renege on the statement could result in real violence against the President or the Black Lives Matter movement,” he said.
“Given the nature of Mr. Walsh’s statement and its potential to incite violence, we ask that you investigate whether or not this statement constitutes a terroristic threat against the President of the United States of America under relevant statute," Ellison added.
