"This was the 53rd consecutive week he was going to put his campaign back on track,” Oliver told his audience.

His economic policy speech on Monday was to set the tone for the days to follow, but things quickly spiraled when Trump decided to declare President Obama the “founder” of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and then proceeded to double, triple and quadruple down on that statement.

“He’s so insistent,” Oliver exclaimed. "He’s like the guy drowning but waving off a lifeboat saying, ‘Get out of here, I’m very buoyant. I’m the most buoyant. Everybody talks about my buoyancy. I’m a tremendous floater.'"

Oliver went on to mock Trump’s attempt to explain away the remark with “sarcasm,” calling it “the douchebag’s apology,” and then noted that the whole thing was canceled out anyway when Trump told supporters he was not being “that sarcastic.”

“You know that riddle where there are two people, one who always lies and one who always tells the truth?” Oliver asked rhetorically. "Donald Trump is both those people at once.”

The second half of the monologue was dedicated to the “troubling” development in Trump’s claim that the election will be rigged in Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonWhy does Bernie Sanders want to quash Elon Musk's dreams? Oliver signed up to become a volunteer "Trump election observer,” receiving an automated email from the Trump campaign vowing "to do everything we are legally allowed to do to stop crooked Hillary from rigging this election.”

"Which is troubling because I’m not sure if Donald Trump knows what he’s legally allowed to do!” Oliver said.
