Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on Friday said he does not expect a position in President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet.

{mosads}After walking out of a meeting with Trump, Gates was asked by reporters in the lobby of Trump Tower whether there’s a position waiting for him in the incoming administration.

“No,” he responded, according to pool reports.

Gates praised Trump’s pick to head the Pentagon, retired Marine Gen. James Mattis.

“We had a very wide-ranging conversation,” Gates said. “I told him I thought his selection of General Mattis to be Secretary of Defense was terrific, very supportive.”

Gates wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal in September blasting both Trump and Hillary Clinton, but singling out Trump for his “naive and irresponsible” praise of Vladimir Putin and calling his plan for the Middle East a “dangerous approach oblivious to the reality” of the region.

Trump fired back on Twitter, calling the former statesman “dopey.”
