The Russian embassy in London tweeted Thursday that the American people will be happy to see President Obama leave office, after his administration announced new sanctions against the country.

"President Obama expels 35 [Russian] diplomats in Cold War deja vu. As everybody, incl [American] people, will be glad to see the last of this hapless Adm.," the embassy tweeted alongside a photo of a duck with the word "lame," a hit at Obama's lame-duck status following the election of Donald TrumpDonald John TrumpGOP senator introduces bill to hold online platforms liable for political bias Rubio responds to journalist who called it 'strange' to see him at Trump rally Rubio responds to journalist who called it 'strange' to see him at Trump rally MORE to the White House in November.

The tweet came about an hour after the Obama administration announced retaliatory measures against Russia in response to hacking aimed at interfering in the U.S. election. The measures included economic sanctions, diplomatic censure and public "naming and shaming."

Obama also announced that 35 Russian intelligence operatives would be expelled from the U.S. and two Russian compounds would be closed.

Russia has continued to deny allegations of hacking in order to sway the result of the presidential election.
