“I’ve been worse treated than President Trump has, so let’s be sure that we know about that,” McCain said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

McCain was captured during the Vietnam War, tortured and held as a prisoner of war for more than five years.

Trump made headlines Wednesday during his address to graduates of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for saying that no politician has ever received worse treatment than he has.

“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media," Trump said during his speech. "No politician in history — and I say this with great surety — has been treated worse or more unfairly.”

Trump early Thursday lashed out after the Justice Department named a special counsel to oversee the investigation into ties between Russia and his campaign, saying he was the victim of the “single greatest witch hunt” in American political history.
