Rep.-elect Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) will plead guilty to assaulting a reporter in May, according to the Associated Press.

Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault following the encounter and now faces a maximum of six months in jail, a $500 fine, or both.

The news comes after The Guardian reported Wednesday that Gianforte issued a full apology to reporter Ben Jacobs after body slammed him last month during a campaign event.

“I am sorry for what I did and the unwanted notoriety this has created for you. I take full responsibility.”

The British publication also reported the future congressman had agreed to give $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Gianforte shook the political world when he body slammed Jacobs on the eve of his election. Despite facing backlash, Gianforte won the historically Republican district.
