The former head of the Scottish government on Wednesday called President Trump “a complete and utter nincompoop” for his comments opposing Scottish independence.

Former First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond slammed Trump for saying the country shouldn’t pursue independence from Great Britain for a second time, according to The Scotsman.

“The Grand Canyon is a minor crevice compared to the vast chasm of ignorance of that man,” Salmond said of Trump.

{mosads}Politico on Wednesday released the transcript of a Trump interview with The Wall Street Journal last week, in which he said that Scotland “went through hell” in its 2014 independence referendum.

He also questioned what would happen to the British Open if Scotland left the nation, saying “keep it in Scotland.” Trump owns the Trump International Golf Links in Scotland.

“Donald Trump’s opposition to independence should seal the deal for the SNP — and to do it on the basis of Scotland losing the ‘British Open’ is typical,” Salmond said.

“The tournament is actually called The Open and the headquarters of the R&A is in St. Andrews which last time I checked was in Scotland,” he added.
