University fires professor who called Harvey ‘karma’ for Texas GOP

The University of Tampa has reportedly cut ties with a visiting sociology professor who seemed to suggest on social media that Tropical Storm Harvey was “karma” because Texas voted to have Republicans in office.

“I dont believe in instant Karma but this kinda feels like it for Texas. Hopefully this will help them realize the GOP doesnt care about them,” Kenneth Storey reportedly tweeted Sunday.

The tweet, which was met with instant backlash, led Storey to be fired two days later, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

The university rebuked Storey’s remarks in a statement Tuesday, saying the comments Storey made on his private Twitter account do not align with the views or values of the school.

{mosads}“We condemn the comments and the sentiment behind them, and understand the pain this irresponsible act has caused,” the school’s statement read in part. “As Floridians, we are well aware of the destruction and suffering associated with tropical weather. Our thoughts and prayers are with all impacted by Hurricane Harvey.”

Storey, who appears to have deleted his Twitter account, tweeted an apology a day later, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

“I deeply regret the statement I posted yesterday. I never meant to wish ill will upon any group. I hope all affected by Harvey recover quickly,” he said.

Storey echoed these remarks, telling an ABC News affiliate that the meaning behind his tweets was taken out of context.

“It is hard to express one’s full thoughts in 140 characters and I realize that taken out of context some tweets may sound extremely off-putting. I never intended it to be that,” he told the news outlet.

His controversial remarks come at a time when Houston and southeastern Texas are reeling from rising water levels that have led thousands to be displaced and left over a dozen people dead.

Harvey, which made landfall last Friday as a category 4 storm, has slammed Houston and other parts of southeastern Texas with several feet of rain.
