Franken apologized Thursday for his actions, while Moore has vocally denied any wrongdoing and vowed to stay in the race ahead of the December special election.

The former FBI director has avoided tweeting directly about political news and events since he was fired by President Trump in May. Some of his tweeted quotes, however, have been taken by many to be indirect shots at political figures or referencing current events.

In late October, Comey tweeted about "man's inclination towards injustice" after former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was indicted on fraud and money laundering charges.

Comey confirmed that the previously unverified account, @FormerBu, was his in October when he posted a photo of himself from the account, which then used the pseudonyn "Reinhold Niebuhr."

"Goodbye Iowa. On the road home. Gotta get back to writing. Will try to tweet in useful ways," Comey tweeted in October, finally confirming his ownership of the account.

Trump fired Comey in May, telling reporters at the time that the Justice Department's investigation into Russian election meddling, including possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow, was part of the reason.
