Connecticut Gov. Friday is also the eight-year anniversary of a deadly earthquake in the country, which critics of the president, including former President Clinton, have noted on social media.

"The US is a nation of immigrants who originate from countries throughout the world. We should celebrate this diversity, not denigrate and shame it," Malloy said in a tweet.

The Washington Post first reported on Thursday that the president had referred to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as "shithole countries" during a meeting on immigration reform.

Trump also reportedly suggested that the U.S. should bring in more immigrants from countries like Norway.

The president has denied the report, saying he did not use that language.

The reported remarks have sparked outrage on both sides of the political aisle.
