"Frankly he ought to apologize for it," Kasich told CNN's Jake Tapper on "The Lead."

"These comments are inappropriate, and frankly the party ought to say it's inappropriate," he continued.

The Washington Post first reported on Thursday the president's comments at an immigration reform meeting with lawmakers in the Oval Office.

The president has faced fierce backlash from the media, Democrats, and members of his own party for the remarks.

The president denied making the comments in a tweet on Friday.

Kasich then went on to say it was time to move on and focus on reaching a legislative fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which was one topic at the meeting.

"I think we need to move on and I think we need to take care of the Dreamers and I think we need to take care of these people who were here legally through the temporary assistance program," he said.
