Pope Francis on Thursday morning married a couple aboard a plane.

The pope married two flight attendants from Chile’s flagship airline on the flight from Santiago to the northern city of Iquique, The Associated Press reported.

Bride Paola Podest and groom Carlos Ciuffardi said they were married in a civil service in 2010.

{mosads}They told the pope they were not able to do a church ceremony due to the earthquake that hit Chile that year.

The head of the airline was the witness during the marriage, according to the AP.

Ciuffardi said he was told a pope had never before married a couple during a flight, noting Pope Francis said the event was “historic.”

The pope is in the middle of a trip to South America.
