George H.W. Bush's spokesman said in a new interview that the former president, who is hospitalized in intensive care, is eager to get well.

Jim McGrath told The Associated Press that Bush wants to finish his recovery and return to the family's summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president is “responding to treatments and appears to be recovering," McGrath said.

"He’s the most goal-oriented person on this planet," McGrath added.

"President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood," his office said in a statement late Monday.
