Stoneman Douglas holds senior prom months after mass shooting

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School held its senior prom in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Saturday night, nearly three months after a gunman killed 17 people and injured numerous others at the school.
The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort hosted 850 Stoneman Douglas students, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
The publication reports that the hotel’s ballroom was adorned with trees, and included actors dressed as forest creatures and fairies.
{mosads}The tables at the event reportedly featured 4-foot floral centerpieces, and butterflies were released from the building’s rooftop during the evening.
The absence of the four seniors killed in the school shooting earlier this year was felt throughout the festivities.
Attendees were greeted with a large ice sculpture in the hallway that read “#MSDSTRONG,” and had access to an outside room for quiet reflection, according to the publication.
Friends and family of senior Meadow Pollack, who was killed in the shooting, paid tribute to her throughout the evening.
“I would have just worn a simple black dress. But I know Meadow would have argued with me that it would be too plain,” Pollack’s friend Carley Ogozaly told The Tampa Bay Times. “Me wearing this pink sparkly thing and me doing my nails the way Meadow would have is my way of making sure Meadow doesn’t miss prom.”
Pollack’s friend Nicolette Miciotta also honored her, wearing pink bracelets with “Princess Meadow” written on them.
Pollack’s father, Andrew Pollack, saw his daughter’s friends off to prom on Saturday evening.
At Meadows’s friends pre-prom. I can only imagine how beautiful my daughter would look today. We all miss you and love you Meadow! #MeadowsMovement #FixIt pic.twitter.com/JJat4QWIoL

Andrew Pollack received national attention in February after he voiced his grievances to President Trump on the issue of school shootings during a White House listening session.
“We as a country failed our children. This shouldn’t happen,” Pollack said. “It stops here with this administration and me. It should have been one school shooting and we should have fixed it. I’m pissed. Because my daughter, I’m not going to see again. She’s not here. … It’s enough. Let’s get together, work with the president and fix the schools.”
