An 8-month-old Palestinian infant was one of eight children who died during Monday’s violent protests along the Israel border, Reuters reports.
Baby Laila al-Ghandour died after inhaling tear gas during mass protests against the U.S. Embassy’s relocation to Jerusalem, according to the news service.
A senior Israeli commander confirmed to Reuters that at least 60 Palestinians were killed Monday. The White House blamed Hamas, the militant Palestinian Islamist group that controls Gaza, for the dozens of deaths in Gaza amid protests over the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem on Monday.
Thousands reportedly gathered to march in Laila’s funeral on Tuesday.
“Let her stay with me, it is too early for her to go,” Laila’s mother reportedly cried as she held her daughter’s body, which was wrapped in a Palestinian flag.
