A Massachusetts high school recalled its yearbooks after a quote attributed to a Nazi leader was found inside it.

Andover High School Principal Philip Conrad told WCVB he was deeply upset when he discovered the quote from Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels inside the school’s 2017–2018 yearbook.

“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it,” the quote read.

“Quoting a racist dictator bent on genocide or his minister of propaganda has no place in our school or our community and it is deeply upsetting to all of us,” Conrad wrote in a statement obtained by the local publication.

A rabbi at a synagogue nearby the school came to the student’s defense after the controversial quote was revealed, arguing that the inclusion of the quote was innocent.

“I don’t think it was anti-Semitic,” Rabbi Robert Goldstein of Andover’s Temple Emanuel told the local station. “I think it was totally innocent on the part of the high school student who chose this quote. I think it’s probably a reference to all this talk about fake news and what’s real and what’s not real.”

According to the local outlet, the recall follows three anti-Semitic incidents at Andover High School, including one in which swastikas were drawn on the desks inside the classroom of a Jewish teacher.
