As the couple headed for the court, a protester tossed an orange shirt reading, “Team Putin,” at the former member of Trump's campaign, who pleaded guilty last year for lying to the FBI.

Later on Friday, Papadopoulos was handed a 14-day sentence in federal prison and a one-year supervised release.

Papadopoulos is the first Trump campaign official to be sentenced as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian election interference.

“I made a terrible mistake for which I paid dearly,” Papadopoulos said in court on Friday, before being handed the sentence. “I was not honest, and I may have hindered the investigation.”

U.S. District Court Judge Randolph D. Moss, who announced the sentence, said he would have ordered that Papadopoulos serve 30 days in prison had he not expressed genuine “remorse” for his actions.

Papadopoulos is the second individual overall to be sentenced in Mueller’s probe.
