Former President Obama thanked American veterans and their families for their service in a Veterans Day message on Sunday.

“To all our veterans and your families: thank you,” Obama tweeted. “There's no tribute that can truly match the magnitude of your service and sacrifice.”

“But all of us can do our best to live up to the American values of service, responsibility, generosity, and citizenship that you helped defend,” he added.

"The American and French patriots of World War I embody the timeless virtues of our two republics,” Trump said at a ceremony at the Suresnes American Cemetery. “Honor and courage. Strength and valor. Love and loyalty, grace and glory.”

Earlier Sunday, world leaders gathered in Paris to walk side by side in commemoration of the end of World War I. Trump traveled separately and arrived late.

Trump also drew widespread criticism on Saturday for canceling a planned trip to a U.S. military cemetery in northern France due to rain.
