Schumer, Pelosi televised response becomes meme on social media

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) appeared on television Tuesday night to deliver a rebuttal to President Trump's Oval Office address, and quickly became a meme on social media.

The visual of Pelosi and Schumer standing side-by-side as they countered Trump's push for a border wall prompted comparisons to the famous painting "American Gothic" and to a couple scolding their children.

"When you think you can sneak into the house after staying out too late, but Mom & Dad are up waiting for you in the living room," wrote conservative commentator Guy Benson.

"We've all been grounded for the weekend," Washington Post political columnist Karen Tumulty captioned the photo. "Also, we should pick up our room. This isn't a hotel."

Schumer and Pelosi accused Trump of trying to "stoke fear" with his Oval Office address, in which he continued his push for a border wall by calling the situation at the southern border a "humanitarian and security crisis."

"Most presidents have used Oval Office addresses for noble purposes," Schumer said. "This president just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration."
