A middle school gym teacher in Wisconsin has been put on indefinite leave after allegedly separating students by race and telling the black students to research games that were played by enslaved children.

The Associated Press reports the Shorewood Intermediate School, just north of Milwaukee, removed the unnamed teacher last week and notified parents of the decision in a letter sent Thursday.

“We take these allegations extremely serious,” Shorewood School District Superintendent Bryan Davis wrote. “Throughout this situation, student safety and well-being have been our top priority.”

The teacher was reportedly teaching the seventh-grade gym class about games from across the globe when she separated the students by race and gave the assignment.

Davis added that the school district is still looking into the incident.

“We will continue to assess the situation and ensure that we provide ongoing support to our students as we move forward,” he wrote.

Reshunda Stevens told local news outlet Fox 6 WITI that her daughter came home from school and asked her “what are slave games?”

Stevens added that the same teacher allegedly asked another one of her daughters last year to be a part of the “colored club.”

“How many more times do people have to feel uncomfortable until change happens?” she asked.
