Libras fire back at Facebook for naming new cryptocurrency after astrological sign representing fairness

Astrologists — and Libras in particular — are lashing out at Facebook for naming its new cryptocurrency after the zodiac sign.

The social media announced Tuesday it is naming its new digital currency Libra, which also represents people born between Sept. 23 and Oct. 22.{mosads}

The sign is said to be tied to balance, harmony and a sense of fairness, according to Astrology.com. It’s typically represented with an image of a balanced scale.

People who identify as Libras took to social media to say they don’t care for Facebook using their sign as the name for an alternative financial system.

At least one Twitter user said they “attacked” by the social media network stealing their sign.

Facebook executive David Marcus told CNN Business the company chose Libra because it represents freedom, justice and money, and it comes from a Roman unit of measurement used to mint coins.

Facebook has come under fire for concerns surrounding its handling of user data and privacy, and the Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether it violated an agreement with the agency to ramp up its security practices.

“Libras have a right to be peeved. Facebook is attempting to represent themselves as fair and just, akin to Libra’s most positive qualities,” astrologist Mackenzie Greer told Business Insider. “Given their track record, I’m not so sure they’ll be able to live up to the Libra name.”
