3 die in fire as Chile protests enter seventh day

The mayor of Santiago, Chile, said Sunday that three people died in a fire that broke out at a supermarket amid ongoing protests in the capital city, according to CNN.

Authorities are “collecting more details” on the fatalities, the first of the week-long protests sparked by a hike in costs for public transit. The nation’s military has imposed a curfew for the city until 7:00 a.m. local time Sunday.

{mosads}After the original announcement proposing the cost increase, Chilean President Sebastian Piñera announced Saturday that the proposal will be suspended, according to CNN. The protests continued after Piñera’s announcement, however, with 57 police officers injured on Friday and 180 demonstrators detained.

Piñera has condemned violence and said currency exchange fluctuations made the fare hike necessary, but said he sympathized with those affected, according to CNN.
