More than 550 journalists were killed in the last decade, according to data collected by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

The press freedom group has been tracking the killings of journalists since 1992. Between 2010 and 2019, 554 journalists were killed with a confirmed motive, according to CPJ’s data.

The number of killings jumps to 603 when “media workers” are included.

The years with the highest journalist killings in the last decade were 2012 and 2013, with 74 reported killings in both of those years.

This year the number of journalists killed in the line of duty was the lowest of the decade, at 25, according to the data. The number dropped nearly 50 percent from 2018’s 56 reported killings.

There were more journalist killings than in the prior decade. CPJ reports 480 journalists were killed between 2000 and 2009.
