Actor Kevin Bacon called on people to share photos of themselves using the hashtag #IStayHomeFor in an effort to encourage people to stay at home when possible to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bacon joked about the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” game in an Instagram post while sharing the hashtag, a game in which movie fans try to identify six or fewer links with the “Footloose” star.

“Hi folks. You know me, right? I’m technically only six degrees away from you. Right now, like people around the world, I’m staying home because it saves lives and it is the only way we’re going to slow down the spread of this coronavirus. Because the contact that you make with someone who makes contact with someone else, that may be what makes somebody’s mom or grandpa or wife sick,” Bacon said in a video shared to Instagram.

Bacon said he is staying home for his wife, actress Kyra Sedgwick, sharing a sign with the hashtag #IStayHomeFor.”

“While you’re staying home, you need to post a video or a sign like this one saying who you’re going to stay home for, and you tag six friends so they do the same. And since we’re all connected by various degrees, trust me, I know, we can work together to stay home and keep each other safe and spread the word,” Bacon said in the video.

He tagged fellow celebrities Jimmy Fallon, Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Kevin Hart, Demi Lovato and David Beckham.

The hashtag has been used by thousands on social media sites since Bacon’s Tuesday post, with several of Bacon’s nominees responding and nominating others.

The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 233,000 people around the world and killed at least 9,818.
