German Oktoberfest canceled again due to COVID-19

Germany’s Oktoberfest is being canceled for the second consecutive year due to ongoing public health concerns stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.
The annual festival, which was scheduled to take place from Sept. 18 to Oct. 3, will not be held this year, the premier of the southern German state of Bavaria said on Monday, Reuters reported.
“In classic beer halls measures such as social distancing and mask-wearing cannot be enforced,” premier Markus Soeder said.
The annual festival brings an estimated 6 million people to Munich every fall, but plans for the beer-soaked celebration were scrapped last fall for the first time.
Germany has vaccinated more than 28 percent of its population so far, Reuters noted, with public health officials saying they could ease restrictions for mass gatherings soon.
The now more than yearlong coronavirus pandemic is threatening other major international events like the 2020 Summer Olympics.
