Prop master says he turned down job on ‘Rust’ because it was ‘completely unsafe’

A veteran prop master on Tuesday said he turned down a job working on Alec Baldwin’s film “Rust” after determining the job would be “completely unsafe.”

Neal Zoromski made his comments during an interview with “Today,” discussing the warning signs of the production on which Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins using a prop gun that he was unaware was loaded.

“I turned the job opportunity down on ‘Rust’ because I felt it was completely unsafe,” Zoromski told NBC News’s Miguel Almaguer.

Zoromski said he became concerned when he first noted that producers of the film had combined the roles of assistant prop master and armorer, who manages firearms on set, into one position, NBC News reported.

“I impressed upon them that there were great concerns about that, and they didn’t really respond to my concerns about that,” Zoromski said.

Some crew members working on the film walked out earlier this month ahead of the fatal shooting, citing concerns for their safety and previous prop gun misfires.

Baldwin was reportedly given the gun by Dave Halls, an assistant director who was previously fired from another production after a gun misfire.

Halls selected the gun off of a cart of three prop guns that the armorer had left outside, in compliance with COVID-19 restrictions, an affidavit by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office stated.

Halls has not yet spoken publicly about the incident on the “Rust” set.

Following the shooting, Baldwin said he was saddened by the tragedy and is cooperating with a police investigation.

“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,” Baldwin said Friday
