Mayor of Maryland suburb of DC dies by suicide

The mayor of Hyattsville, a Maryland suburb outside of Washington, D.C., died by suicide on Tuesday.

The city said in a statement that Kevin Ward died from “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

“Mayor Ward was a valued and trusted leader and a fierce advocate for all the people of Hyattsville. We are heartbroken at this loss and extend our deepest sympathy to his family,” the city added.

Ward became mayor in 2021 after he was elected twice to the town’s council, ABC 7 News reported

City Council Vice President Robert Croslin will now take over as interim mayor.

No details about his funeral services have been released as the city asked for privacy for the family.

The city provided the Community Crisis Services hotline number along with the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Ward lives on through his husband and two adopted sons, according to the local outlet.
