Former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) may claim paternity of the child of his mistress Rielle Hunter, the New York Times reported Saturday.

Citing unnamed sources, the Times reported that Edwards is considering acknowledging that he is the father of Hunter's child, a claim that he had previously denied.

Edwards has admitted having an affair with Hunter, the revelation of which largely tarnished his political reputation, especially as the affair took place during his wife's battle against incurable cancer.

The Times reported that Elizabeth Edwards, who has worked lately on increasing her own public profile, is resistant to her husband acknowledging paternity of the child.
