Pennsylvania Attorney Geneal Tom Corbett (R) starts out the 2010 race for governor as a strong favorite over some relatively unknown opponents.

A new Quinnipiac poll today shows Corbett leading Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-Pa.) in the Republican primary 42-13. In the general election, he leads two other relatively unknown candidates -- Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and State Auditor General Jack Wagner -- by margins of 47-28 and 44-29, respectively.

The Democratic primary shows those two candidates and Montgomery County Commissioner (and 2004 Arlen Specter opponent) Joe Hoeffel bunched in the low teens in their primary. A head-to-head matchup between Corbett and Hoeffel is not measured.

Much of this appears to be a name ID thing. Corbett is known to more than half of voters, while the three Democrats all have at least 70 percent of voters who don't know enough about them to rate them. It's particularly interesting that barely anybody knows who Hoeffel is, despite his statewide campaign five years ago. Four in five voters were unable to rate him as favorable or unfavorable.
