Former Rep. Charlie Wilson dead at 76
Former Rep. Charlie Wilson (D-Texas), whose story inspired a 2007 movie, has died according to a report.
Wilson, whose partying in office between 1972 and 1996 became the substance of some legends on Capitol Hill, was pronounced dead at the age of 76, according to KTRE News. The cause of death was cardio-pulmonary arrest.
Wilson channeled money to arm themujahedeen to fight the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan, which became the subject of a 2007 film written by Aaron Sorkin in which Wilson was portrayed by the actor Tom Hanks.
Wilson was known for hard-living antics, and received a heart transplant in 2007.
He should not be confused with current Rep. Charlie Wilson (D-Ohio).
