The New York Post is reporting that Andrew Cuomo (D) is putting out the word to Rudy Giuliani that Cuomo will run for governor.

The secret message, delivered through intermediaries, is cast as a courtesy between friends. It could also just happen to have the helpful side effect of perhaps scaring off the former New York mayor.

Cuomo, the state's attorney general, has been vague about his 2010 plans, though many see him basically waiting for Gov. David Paterson (D) to bow out gracefully, at which point he can have the nomination to himself.

The attorney general has suggested he might not challenge the governor in a primary, but if it comes down to it, he is widely expected to do just that.

Interestigly, Giuliani in a New York Magazine article this weekend suggests that the top executive job in New York might not be for him.
