House Dem Caucus chairman says he was also target of healthcare threats

The chairman of the House Democratic Caucus acknowledged on Friday his office had received multiple threats related to the passage of healthcare reform last week.

However, Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) declined to provide details about the threats, noting only during an event at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center that his office has “reported them to the appropriate authorities.”

“We just don’t go into the nature of them,” he said, as reported by the Hartford Courant. “We report them immediately. There’s a procedure you follow and that has been done.”

{mosads}”I’m not downplaying those, but it’s nothing that I want to dwell on,” the congressman continued. “What we’re going to dwell on is having hearings out in this district, having round tables with the business community, and making sure everybody’s informed about this bill.”

Larson is among a growing number of lawmakers, Democrats in particular, that has been subject to increased threats of violence and vandalism, primarily stemming from the passage of healthcare reform this week.

Among other incidents, Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), the chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, had a brick thrown through her district office window. Other Democrats have been faxed photos or drawings of nooses, while still more have been subject to racist epithets.

Police once believed protesters targeted House GOP Whip Eric Cantor’s (Va.) office in Virginia, after staff there discovered a bullet had shattered a window. But an investigation later revealed the fired shot was actually “stray gunfire” related to another incident.

Leaders from both chambers and political parties have since denounced the spike in threats as unacceptable. But that has hardly stopped Democrats and Republicans from trading barbs over the incidents, each accusing the other of stoking the violence or trying to capitalize from it politically.
