Virginia gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell could best Democrat Creigh Deeds by 12 points in Tuesday's vote, according to a new poll.

McDonnell, who has led Deeds for most of the race, scored 53 percent of surveyed voters' support in the Richmond Times-Dispatch's latest measure, released this weekend. By contrast, only 41 percent of voters signaled they would choose Deeds on Election Day, while 6 percent said they were still undecided.

If McDonnell wins, he will be the state's first elected Republican governor since Jim Gilmore took office in 1997.
