Hoyer: Ethics cleaned up because Dems trying Dems still have their posts
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said that the fact that Democrats on the Ethics Committee hadn’t been ousted for trying two prominent party members showed that ethics had indeed been cleaned up under Nancy Pelosi’s watch.
On “Fox News Sunday,” Hoyer was asked the speaker’s pledge to “drain the swamp” and stop ethics abuses in relation to the trials of Reps. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) that hadn’t yet been scheduled.
Asked by host Chris Wallace whether the trials would come before midterm elections or not, Hoyer said that was up to Ethics Committee Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and ranking Republican Jo Bonner (Ala.).
“The fact of the matter is the ethics process is working,” Hoyer said. “The fact of
the matter is, unlike under Republicans, we haven’t fired the chairman
of the Ethics Committee because they went after somebody in the
Democratic Party, and we haven’t removed any members from the Ethics
Committee. The ethics process is working.”
When asked about holding trials before voters commit to Rangel and Waters again in November, Hoyer responded, “I think that needs to be resolved as quickly as possible.
“Obviously, the members of the Ethics Committee are going to have to
make that determination,” he said. “And they have their own issues to deal with in
their own elections.”
