State Del. Terry Kilgore (R) is taking a pass on challenging Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va.), and Republican recruiting efforts are now turning to state Sen. William Wampler.

Kilgore was the lone focus of much of the GOP's recruiting efforts in the district for a while, and his decision not to run is one of few setbacks recently for GOP recruiting efforts. Kilgore's decision was delayed because he was seeking reelection to the state House last year.

Republicans see Wampler as a worthy replacement, but he is also in line to take the reins of the state Senate Finance Committee if the GOP can regain a majority in the chamber.

Kilgore told the Washington Post that he doesn't see Wampler making the leap.

"He couldn't walk away from that, " Kilgore said.
