Freshman Democratic Rep. Steve Driehaus (D) would struggle mightily in a rematch against former Rep. Steve Chabot (R), a new poll found Saturday.

A SurveyUSA poll commissioned by the liberal blog firedoglake showed Chabot besting Driehaus by a 17-point margin in Ohio's 1st congressional district.

56 percent of voters in the southwest Ohio district near Cincinnati said they would prefer to send Chabot, who represented the district for seven terms, back to Washington. 39 percent said they would vote to reelect Driehaus, while five percent were undecided.

The poll is the latest warning sign for a Democratic incumbent that this fall's midterm elections could be an uphill battle.

A string of more senior Democrats from centrist districts have already said they would retire rather than face reelection, including Rep. Vic Snyder (D-Ark.) on Friday.

The poll, conducted Jan. 12-14, has a 4.1 percent margin of error.
