Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) Thursday was named to the Senate Republicans' leadership team.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) appointed the third-term senator counsel to the Senate Republican leadership, a position also held by Sens. Bob Bennett (R-Utah) and Judd Gregg (R-N.H.)

"Sen. Hutchison has played a critical role in our Conference since coming to the Senate," McConnell said in a statement. "I am happy to have Sen. Hutchison serve as a member of the Senate Republican Leadership team and welcome her continued insight on issues important to American families."

The appointment comes after Hutchison toyed with leaving the Senate during and after her failed primary challenge to Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R).
