Bachmann camp claims ‘tremendous fundraising boost’ since Ames victory
Rep. Michele Bachmann’s (R-Minn.) presidential campaign claimed an influx of support since her big win Saturday in the Ames, Iowa, straw poll.
Bachmann’s campaign wouldn’t put a dollar amount on the spike in fundraising since the Tea Party congresswoman placed first in the Saturday contest, which serves as an unofficial gauge of Iowa voters’ interest in presidential candidates.
Spokeswoman Alice Stewart said the win — a slightly narrow one over the second-place finisher, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) — had been a “tremendous boost to fundraising.” But Stewart wouldn’t say how much cash had been collected, explaining that such data wouldn’t be available until the campaign’s next Federal Election Commission (FEC) filing, which isn’t due until the end of September.
The Minnesota congresswoman’s win at Ames was seen as a validation of her two-month-old bid for the Republican presidential nomination. It cemented her status as a top-tier candidate, and affirmed polls that showed her leading the pack in Iowa.
Bachmann’s campaign has certainly tried to use her victory at the straw poll to its advantage. Her campaign’s homepage touts the showing on a big button soliciting donations based on the Iowa win.

That Bachmann would benefit from a surge in donations and interest is no surprise. The bigger question is just how much she’ll benefit, with Paul nipping at her heels and the divided attention between the Ames event and Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s (R) same-day announcement that he’d also be running for president.
Perhaps more promising for Bachmann’s campaign are some of the phone calls it has received since Saturday; Stewart said that a number of big-money donors have gotten in touch with the campaign to volunteer organizing top-dollar events that could help Bachmann raise some serious cash to support her bid for the presidency.
