The Obama administration has been engaging in "appeasement" with unfriendly foreign nations, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele alleged Friday night.

Steele made the incendiary claim that the U.S. had been too apologetic for American attitudes during trips to Europe and Latin America in recent weeks.

"What I think I've seen here so far from the Obama administration is 'appeasement through apology,'" Steele said on Fox News, comparing the Obama administration's strategy with the Reagan administration's "peace through strength" dictum.

"You have to keep in mind that this is the same dictator of Venezuela who called President Obama, just a few weeks ago, an 'idiot,'" Steele argued. "We have to be a little more smart in our foreign policy here, and not elevating them to the level of the president of the United States."

The RNC chairman, who has been himself plagued by early missteps in office, said the Obama administration is suffering from a "steep learning curve" when it comes to foreign policy.
