America has been smart to occasionally break with Europe on foreign policy, Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Michael Steele said.

Steele took aim at President Obama's comments overseas last week that the U.S. "has shown arrogance and been dismissive" in its relationship with Europe.

"It doesn't mean we're arrogant; it means we're smart enough to give a damn," he said Wednesday night on Fox News. "How do you go to a foreign soil and criticize the American people, and refer to us -- our hard work, our concerns about our economies and our futures -- as arrogant?"

Steele accused Obama of suffering from an "arrogance of power" in assuming Americans are on board with its foreign and economic policies.
