The survey of more than 600 likely voters, however, has a margin of error of four percentage points, which means that Obama's lead is statistically insignificant.

McCain is suffering from tepid support among Republicans; just 73 percent of likely GOP voters back him. The previous poll, taken last month, showed McCain ahead 53 percent to 40 percent.
