Pakistan is now the central front on the Global War on Terror, and because of our diversion of resources and attention to the tragic misadventure in Iraq, we have lost its ‘frontier’ to terrorists and insurgents that use it as a ‘safe haven’ to regain influence in Afghanistan and plot against U.S. interests. We must reassert U.S. leadership in the region, from reviving Pakistan’s army for an aggressive approach in the borderlands to creating incentives for cooperation by the delivery of economic and social services, and security, to its people. This takes effort and attention of U.S. leadership that is unfortunately focused on Iraq where the Global War on Terror is not.
