“In 2012, there were over 3,500 weather-related records set due to extreme heat, rain, drought, cold and wind,” Blumenauer said. “Hurricane Sandy was one of just 11 weather disasters last year in the United States that caused more than $1 billion of losses, a total of over $60 billion, which taxpayers are being forced to help assume the burden.

Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.) agreed with Blumenauer that temperatures are rising, and that these increases are leading to these weather events.

“The climate is changing, it is warmer,” he said. “There are more extreme events.”

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) also cited today’s weather as a bad sign.

“In Memphis, it does occasionally get hot, but it also does in Washington. I think it’s supposed to be 90 today,” Cohen said.

“It’s just unbelievable that last week it was cold,” Cohen added. “I mean, I had my winter suit when I went home, and I brought my summer stuff today.”

Those who agree that human activity is leading to climate change often cite extreme weather as proof of this belief, while their opponents say individual weather events cannot be seen as proof.

Temperatures in Washington hit 90 degrees today, which broke the record of 89 degrees for today’s date that was hit more than 90 years ago, in 1922. Today was also the first 90 degree day in April in three years.

Blumenthal said he invited House Republicans to join his floor discussion on climate change, but said no Republican accepted.
