House to start work on transportation, housing spending bill

Some Democrats say the cuts in the bill would devastate the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Transportation. Democrats noted that Community Development Block Grants, for example, would be cut to $1.6 billion in the bill, compared to the $3.3 billion in funding for 2013.

{mosads}Elsewhere, the bill would cut $185 million from the Federal Aviation Administration’s operations budget, and $575 million from FAA’s facilities and equipment budget. A total of $400 million would be cut from Amtrak’s capital grant program.

While the committee will approve a rule for the bill this week, actual floor work is likely next week. The House already has a few other bills that it is trying to get to this week, but may also have to push into next week.

Those are H.R. 5, the Student Success Act, and H.R. 2397, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act. The Rules Committee will also approve a rule for these bills as well on Wednesday.
