Under the bill, the president could deny an entry visa to a Chinese official or members of his or her family when the official is involved in the repression of religious minorities in China, the trafficking of North Korean refugees or the violation of human rights of Chinese citizens as a member of Chinas law enforcement.

The Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over the bill, so Chairman Smiths cosponsorship of it increases its chances of moving through the committee. In July, the committee approved a bill that would eliminate the U.S. diversity visa program.
