He said a bill from House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) would end Saturday deliveries and cut jobs, while the Senate bill would not. While the House bill focuses on closing post offices as a way of getting the USPS back into the black, the Senate bill would let the USPS restructure retirement payments that Democrats say have landed the service in the red.

“Our bill builds a leaner postal system,” Reid said. “Ours keeps overnight and Saturday service.”

{mosads}The Senate took up the Postal Reform Act, S. 1789, this week, but Republicans and Democrats got into an early fight over unrelated amendments. Reid admitted Thursday morning that an agreement on amendments still hadn’t been reached despite negotiations all day Wednesday.

Reid said his deadline for a deal was 11 a.m., and if a finite list of amendments isn’t agreed to, the Senate will hold a vote at 2:15 p.m. to invoke cloture on a substitute amendment from Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine).
